Considerations for the Next Compton Telescope Mission

چکیده
A high resolution Compton telescope has been identified by the Gamma Ray Astronomy Program Working Group (GRAPWG) as the highest priority major mission in gamma ray astrophysics following GLAST. This mission should provide 25-100 times improved sensitivity, relative to CGRO and INTEGRAL, for MeV gamma ray lines. It must have good performance for narrow and broad lines and for discrete and diffuse emissions. Several instrumental approaches are being pursued to achieve these goals. We discuss issues relating to this mission including alternative detector concepts, instrumental configurations, and background reduction techniques. We have pursued the development of position-sensitive solidstate detectors (Ge, Si) for a high spectral resolution Compton telescope mission. A ∼1 m germanium Compton telescope of position-sensitive germanium detectors was the basis for one of the GRAPWG concepts. Preliminary Monte Carlo estimates for the sensitivities of this instrument are encouraging. However, there are technical challenges of cooling large volumes of Ge and providing the large number of spectroscopy channels. We also show that with only two Compton scatter interactions followed by a third interaction, the incident gamma ray energy and direction cone can be precisely determined in detectors with excellent energy and position resolution. Full energy deposition is not required. We present a promising concept for a high efficiency Compton instrument for which thick silicon strip detectors might be preferred.

Simulated Performance of a Germanium Compton Telescope
To build upon the goals of the upcoming INTEGRAL mission, the next generation soft γ-ray (0.2-20 MeV) observatory will require improved sensitivity to nuclear line emission while maintaining high spectral resolution. We present the simulated performance of a germanium Compton telescope (GCT) design, which will allow a factor of ten improvement in sensitivity over INTEGRAL/SPI. We also discuss a...

We present a space mission concept for a low energy gamma-ray telescope, ATHENA, which is under investigation as the next major advance in gamma-ray spectroscopy following the current COMPTON Gamma Ray Observatory and the planned INTEGRAL missions. The instrument c o v ers the nuclear line emission energy domain with dramatically improved sensitivity and spectral resolution. The baseline conngu...
متن کاملDetection of partial polarization in Compton scattered photons
It has been recently proposed [1] to use polarization of Compton scattered γrays to improve the imaging performance of Compton telescopes. Building upon that work, we detected the aforementioned polarization in a sample of 1.836 MeV γ-rays from the LXeGRIT Compton telescope. Here we present the measurement, together with detector oriented considerations on the application of the principle to a ...
متن کاملBlazars: the next gamma-ray view of GLAST
Blazars, the extreme family of AGN, can be strong gamma-ray emitters and form the largest fraction of identified point sources of EGRET. Most of the high energy peaked blazars, have the inverse Compton part of the spectral energy distribution, peaked in GeV bands, and can be described by synchrotron selfCompton models. The next Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is a high energy (30Me...
متن کاملCompton Imaging of MeV Gamma-Rays with the Liquid Xenon Gamma-Ray Imaging Telescope (LXeGRIT)
The Liquid Xenon Gamma-Ray Imaging Telescope (LXeGRIT) is the first realization of a liquid xenon time projection chamber for Compton imaging of MeV γ-ray sources in astrophysics. By measuring the energy deposit and the three spatial coordinates of individual γ-ray scattering points, the location of the source in the sky is inferred with Compton kinematics reconstruction. The angular resolution...
